What Lies Beneath

Before we knew we were getting a trailer, before we glimpsed the possibilities of a new garden room in the spidery, damp dark place we called the "grotto", before anything happened in our front yard we had to do something about our sundeck.

When that welcome west sun hit it in the spring you didn't want to be anywhere else.

The plants loved it.

On a property filled with shade, hostas and other shade lovers came into their own away from slugs. They could be easily moved if the sun got to be too hot.

We knew, however that our days enjoying this sun deck were numbered.

The deck was no longer safe.

And with apologies to all we got rid of it.  We didn't know if we'd replace it.  As much as we loved our rotten little spot in the sun we knew what laid beneath.

We could clean it up good. And then the light that used to flood the deck would flood the newly exposed "grotto" underneath.  A daylight basement worthy of the name, with its own entrance.
